Accurate, efficient detection of lead in paint, soil, dust, and more.

Lead Inspection Services with the SciAps X-550 XRF Analyzer

Overview: Our lead inspection services provide reliable, on-site testing for properties and facilities needing compliance with HUD, EPA, OSHA, and industrial safety standards. We utilize the SciAps X-550 XRF analyzer—a top-tier, portable device engineered for rigorous testing needs across various applications. This advanced analyzer is equipped with multiple modes, allowing us to offer accurate, efficient detection of lead in paint, soil, dust, and more.

Our Technology: SciAps X-550 XRF Analyzer

The SciAps X-550 XRF analyzer is a powerful, ultra-lightweight device with a tapered, ergonomic design, ideal for on-the-go testing, including the rigorous demands of the mining industry. Key features include:

  • Miniaturized X-ray tube with a rugged rhodium (Rh) 50 kV x-ray tube at 5W power, enabling fast, precise readings.
  • High-resolution Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) at 25 mm², with a resolution of 135 eV at 5.95 Mn K-alpha line, and a high count rate of over 90% live time at 250k counts per second, for exceptional data accuracy.
  • Three Beam Settings for optimal detection limits across elements, including phosphorus (P) through lead (Pb).
  • Auto-Calibration system that uses an external 316 stainless steel test material, ensuring continuous accuracy and reliability.
  • Protective Mesh Covering to prevent accidental damage to the SDD detector.
  • Dual Cameras (micro and macro) for capturing photos of test locations, aiding documentation and precision.
  • Android-Based Operating System with Google-powered intuitive interface, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS capabilities for easy data management and spatial tagging.

Inspection Applications and Capabilities

Our X-550 XRF analyzer is versatile and adaptable, with several integrated applications that enable us to meet specific lead testing requirements for various environments:

1. HUD Lead Paint App:
The HUD Lead Paint App is optimized for lead detection on painted surfaces, crucial for HUD-compliant inspections in residential and public buildings. This app offers two operating modes:

  • PCS Mode: Automatically terminates testing once lead levels are confirmed as above or below the 1.0 mg/cm² action level with 95% confidence. This minimizes testing time while meeting HUD guidelines.
  • OSHA/IH App: Allows precision testing with detection limits as low as 0.01 mg/cm², ideal for industrial hygiene and workplace safety assessments where any lead presence may pose a hazard.

2. Soil Environmental App:
The Soil Environmental App provides precise analysis of lead in soil, supporting safety assessments and environmental compliance. With detection limits suitable for identifying all 8 RCRA metals and 12 of the 13 EPA Priority Pollutant Metals (excluding beryllium), this app enables us to:

  • Detect key elements such as Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo, Hg, Tl, Pb, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Ba.
  • Meet EPA standards for metals monitoring in environments where soil contamination is a concern.

3. OSHA/IH App:
Our team uses the OSHA/IH App for comprehensive workplace safety inspections, following OSHA and industrial hygiene protocols. The app enables precise, compliant testing for lead in dust, air filters, and surfaces, with limits set to meet permissible exposure levels (PEL) under OSHA guidelines. The high-resolution detection, down to 0.01 mg/cm², helps us identify even trace lead amounts, providing clear and actionable safety data.

4. Fast Alloy App:
For broader material composition analysis, the Fast Alloy App enables quick, non-destructive identification of metals, including lead, within various materials. This feature is essential in industrial settings where alloys may contain mixed metals and precise content analysis is required.

Other Services

Asbestos Surveys

When are asbestos surveys needed?

Anytime there will be a renovation or repair. Since the main asbestos regulations are related to worker safety, air quality, disposal of hazardous waste and local permits there will almost always be one of the regulations that are applicable. This can be confusing because of the overlap of regulations in Southern California.

Lead Paint Inspections

Do my painting projects need a lead paint test?

Lead is toxic and consequently causes health and behavioral problems, especially in children. Because of this, a lead paint survey or lead paint samples are necessary when paint is disturbed on a structure built before 1978.
